WELL BEING
The Importance of Sunlight Exposure

As discussed last week, the underlying principle is that a routine provides structure that can help you feel more organized and in control. When you feel more in control, you can take positive steps to manage all aspects of your life. A great routine provides improved cognitive function, better health and overall well being. However, the one aspects of a routine that should a non-negotiable for everyone is exposure to sunlight in the morning.

Research clearly shows that morning outdoor light exposure provides the following:

  • a beneficial cortisol peak that positively impacts daytime mood, energy and alertness.

  •  Sun exposure can help people with anxiety and depression, especially in combination with other treatments.

  • Early morning exposure to sunlight helps you fall asleep at night.

  • Vitamin D is extremely critical for bone health, helping to reduce inflammation and to modulate cell growth.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report The Global Burden of Disease Due to Ultraviolet Radiation - DALYs measure how much a person’s expectancy of healthy life is reduced by premature death or disability caused by disease. This report shared that the annual disease burden of 3.3 billion DALYs worldwide might result from very low levels of exposure.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Embed an early walk outdoors to your daily routine

If you think your daily routines could use a tune up, consider one small step:

Choose a time everyday when you can begin your day walking outdoors to get exposure to sunlight (even if its cloudy) and get some physical activity in!

A morning walk outdoors can provide you with both light exposure and optic flow, which reduces feelings of stress and anxiety all day.

Imam Jaffer Sadiq (AS) recommends walking outdoors, which would naturally include exposure to sunlight (if done during the day). He has been quoted as saying that “Walking keeps away illness.” (Wasa’il Al Shia)
